Anchorage man drowns while swimming in Mat-Su lake

An Anchorage man drowned in a lake near Wasilla early this morning while swimming
with friends, according to Alaska State Troopers.
The body of 25-year-old Melvin G. Watkins II was recovered from the water just after
5 a.m., troopers said. Authorities were called to an unnamed lake adjacent to Beth
Lake, off Lewis Loop southwest of Wasilla, about 1:45 a.m. to a report of a drowning.
Troopers say Watkins had been swimming with friends when he started to struggle
and then went underwater. Witnesses tried to rescue him but could not.
Divers recovered his body from the water at 5:05 a.m., troopers said.
Troopers said they do not suspect foul play.
